Collin Klein commanded a promising drive into Arkansas territory, but it stalled at the 26. On fourth-and-eight, kicker Anthony Cantele's 43-yard field goal attempt went wide right.

After watching Kansas State reel off 16 straight points, Arkansas finally answered with a nine-play, 58-yard drive.

Tyler Wilson capped the drive with a 9-yard TD pass to Cobi Hamilton running across the middle of the end zone. The TD came on third-and-goal.

It's 26-16 Arkansas with 3:57 left in the third quarter.

Cats strike first in the second half

Talk about halftime adjustments - Kansas State took the second-half kickoff and marched 60 yards in seven plays to pull within 19-16 of Arkansas.

QB Collin Klein scored from six yards out on a draw play up the middle. After the TD, Klein was seen getting his left wrist/hand looked at by the training staff. He appears to have a cut on his hand. As tough as Klein is, it's doubtful he will miss a play.

Defenses dominant in the first half

OK, so it's not Baylor and Washington in the Alamo Bowl. But Arkansas and Kansas State are putting on an entertaining AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic despite some rather modest offensive numbers.

Kansas State has just 60 yards and five first downs. Arkansas, which holds a 19-9 lead at the break, has 155 yards and only four first downs.

Kansas State has punted six times, Arkansas two times. Kansas State is just 2 of 8 on third downs and Arkansas is only 3 of 9. Both teams have fumbled and lost the ball once.

Thankfully, we haven't had a ton of penalties. Kansas State has been penalized four times for 23 yards, Arkansas two times for 18 yards.

You've got to think these coaching staffs will make adjustments and we will see more offensive fireworks in the second half.

Arkansas returns the favor with a turnover

After Arkansas capitalized on a turnover, K-State did the same.

Arkansas QB Tyler Wilson fumbled while being tackled by Adam Davis. The Wildcats recovered at the 13 but with no timeouts and only 1:06 left in the half.

No matter. After an Arkansas timeout, K-State quarterback Collin Klein rolled to his right then threw back to his left to a wide-open Andre McDonald in the end zone.

Our score at halftime is Arkansas 19, Kansas State 9.

Blocked PAT return a first in AT&T Cotton Bowl history

Kansas State's Nigel Malone put himself in the record books when he picked up a loose ball after a blocked extra point kick and returned it for two points.

Teammate Raphael Guidry blocked the PAT try, but only after Arkansas scored on a 45-yard pass from Tyler Wilson to Jarius Wright.

Oh, and we had our first Eric Stonestreet appearance on the big video screen - he was cheering the PAT return from a suite here in Cowboys Stadium.

The Razorbacks lead, 19-2, with 4:10 to play in the half.

Joe Adams' punt return gives Hogs 10-0 lead

A 51-yard punt return by Joe Adams has given Arkansas a 10-0 lead with 14:27 left in the second quarter.

Kansas State was backed up to its 4 yard line when it punted. Adams fielded the kick near his own sideline, then raced across to the Kansas State sideline before zooming upfield untouched.

Arkansas strikes first, 3-0

The first quarter was a punting contest until Arkansas came up with the first big break of the game. Razorbacks DE Jake Bequette forced a fumble at the Kansas State 13 yard line.

Four plays later, Zach Hocker kicked a 26-yard field goal and the Razorbacks had a 3-0 lead with 4:19 left in the first quarter.

A stellar group of inductees to the AT&T Cotton Bowl Hall of Fame was revealed Thursday at the Big Play Luncheon.

The group includes: USC offensive lineman Tony Boselli, Texas linebacker Tom Campbell, Boston College quarterback Doug Flutie, Notre Dame (and Arkansas) coach Lou Holtz, Texas A&M quarterback Kevin Murray and Arkansas defensive tackle Jim Williams.

The group will be inducted during enshrinement ceremonies April 19 at Cowboys Stadium.

AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic VP of Communications Charlie Fiss presents Kilgore Rangerette Bethany Ford with a commemorative watch after the Rangerettes' rehearsal on Thursday at Cowboys Stadium.

Each year in a special ceremony, sophomore Rangerettes are given watches by the Cotton Bowl in appreciation for their service to the bowl.

The Rangerettes have performed at Cotton Bowl pregame and halftime festivities for more than 60 years. The AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic will be televised at 7 p.m. CT Friday, Jan. 6 on Fox.

Big Play luncheon today; K-State visits children's hospital

All the official media sessions are over and practices are closed, but you can still catch the players and coaches today at the Big Play Luncheon, the annual good-time affair on the eve of the AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic.

ARLINGTON, TX -- The No. 6 Arkansas Razorbacks continued to work closer to their matchup with the No. 8 Kansas State Wildcats in the 76th AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic with a fourth practice at Cowboys Stadium Wednesday morning.

Head coach Bobby Petrino commented in his news conference prior to the team’s practice that the Razorbacks have enjoyed a great week preparing to play in a game with such great history and tradition as the AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic.

“It’s been a tremendous experience for our football team and our families with a first-class organization. Everything we have done and all of the hospitality has been amazing,” said Petrino. “I’m proud of our football team. They’ve worked extremely hard to get here. We’re really looking forward to the matchup on Friday night. I think it’s going to be a great game. Whenever you can play the sixth-place team in the country against the eighth-place team in the country, I think it’s really exciting and I know our players and coaches are excited for the game to get here.”

This year’s Classic could cap a highly successful season for Arkansas, as a win over Kansas State would give the Razorbacks their first 11-win season since 1977. That season Arkansas finished with an 11-1 record and as No. 2 in the nation on the strength of a 31-6 victory over Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl on Jan. 2, 1978.

Before the Razorbacks put to a close on the 2011 season, the team will enjoy another social outing, again at American Airlines Center, to see the defending National Basketball Association champion Dallas Mavericks take on the Phoenix Suns. Arkansas’ final practice Thursday afternoon is CLOSED to the media and public.

SNYDER STRESSES STICKING TO THE BASICS IN FOURTH WORKOUT
ARLINGTON, TX – Players and coaches for the No. 8 Kansas State Wildcats stressed continuing the hardnosed style of preparation that propelled them to the 76th AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic.

Today was no different as the Wildcats practiced at Cowboys Stadium for the fourth consecutive afternoon. The Wildcats held a two hour workout as they look towards matching up against a high-profile SEC squad in the No. 6 Arkansas Razorbacks.

“They’re a determined group and have the “never give up” type of attitude and approach to each ballgame that they play,” Head Coach Bill Snyder said. “I love the determination that they possess. I also greatly appreciate their willingness to do things that a lot of people in this day and age don’t like to do and don’t want to do.”

That hard work and attention to detail has translated to a team that isn’t flashy, but takes care of the little things. KSU got to ten wins and a No. 6 BCS Ranking with just the fifth-ranked defense and the ninth-ranked offense in the Big 12 yet held the distinction of being the least penalized team in the Big 12.

“That’s why Coach Snyder is great,” DE Jordan Voelker said. “Each player has their weaknesses and he utilizes our strengths the best and moves us to the position we fit.”

It’s no surprise then that in year two of his second stint at K-State that Coach Snyder was the recipient of both the Woody Hayes National Coach of the Year and the Big 12 Coach of the Year awards. A win on Friday would propel Kansas State to their first 11-win season since back-to-back 11-win seasons in 2002 and 2003.

ARKANSAS WORKS OUT AT COWBOYS STADIUM FOR A THIRD TIME
ARLINGTON -- The third day of the New Year saw the No. 6 Arkansas Razorbacks go through their third practice on the Cowboys Stadium turf for the 76th AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic.

Taking over his first game as the Razorbacks’ defensive coordinator after seven seasons at Ohio State, Paul Haynes said he has been pleased with how the players have responded to him after taking the position in early December as the team tries to bring home its fourth Field Scovell Trophy in 12 Classic appearances.

“I have really appreciated them and how they have welcomed me into the family,” said Haynes. “It’s been an easy transition. The things I have asked them to do, they do it. They’ve been very supportive.”
“It’s been a great transition. I stay busy because there’s been something every single day and that’s kind of been the fun part for me to get to know these guys.”

Haynes added that he feels the defense has worked with great focus in its three practices so far.

“The venue we are going to play in and the venue we have been practicing in, Cowboys Stadium, has been
awesome,” said Haynes. “Our guys prepare well and I expected that from guys like this. The preparation has been good. The guys are focused; the guys are ready. We’re early (in our practice week). You’re always kind of worried about them getting up (for the game) but once we’ve stepped on that field, it’s been all focus and good practices.”

Haynes and five defensive starters – seniors DE Jake Bequette, LB Jerry Franklin, S/LB Jerico Nelson and S Tramain Thomas and junior DE Tenarius Wright -- stepped off the practice field Tuesday afternoon for the Razorbacks’ news conference at the media headquarters hotel while the remainder of the team took time away from its bowl preparations to visit Children’s Medical Center in Dallas.

Tonight, the entire team will enjoy some National Hockey League action as the Dallas Stars face the Detroit Red Wings at American Airlines Arena in Dallas. The Razorbacks get back to work Wednesday morning for another practice session at Cowboys Stadium following the final official AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic news conference featuring the two head coaches, Arkansas’ Bobby Petrino and Kansas State’s Bill Snyder.

KANSAS STATE SHARPENS FOCUS DURING THIRD PRACTICE
ARLINGTON – Execution was the theme of the day as the No. 8 Kansas State Wildcats worked on finalizing their AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic game plan during the Cats third practice at Cowboys Stadium. The Wildcats practiced foralmost three hours today, going full speed in pads.

Looming at the end of the week is a top-ten showdown against No. 6 Arkansas. The Wildcat players are beginning to lock in to their ultimate goal of a Classic championship through an intense, physical practice.

“We’re human and we make mistakes but we’re trying to get those ironed out before the ballgame,” OL B.J. Finney said. “Everybody is energized and ready to go and ready for the game. That has carried into practice.”

Much of the Wildcats (10-2, 6-2 Big 12) success can be credited to their QB Collin Klein, who was named a First Team All-Big 12 performer. Klein comes into the Classic accounting for a phenomenal 69% of KSU’s offense (1,745 yards, 1,099 yards rushing).

The Loveland, Colo. product says he’s rested after a rough season that saw him take a number of physical hits in Big 12 play. Klein and the rest of the offense are looking forward to Friday’s matchup against a physical Arkansas (10-2, 6-2 SEC) defense.

“It’s just a matter of us as players being able to execute better than Arkansas does for four quarters and hopefullycome away with a win,” Klein said.

Wildcats offensive players were the focus earlier in the day at the media hotel, as co-offensive coordinators Del Miller and Dana Dimel, as well as Finney, OL Clyde Aufner, WR Chris Harper, RB John Hubert and Klein; spoke with reporters for an hour.

Tonight the team will attend a special Beef Bowl party at Lawry’s in Dallas. Tomorrow morning both Head Coach Bill Snyder and Arkansas Head Coach Bobby Petrino will meet the media to discuss the week and the upcoming battle.

Kansas State quarterback Collin Klein met with the media this morning during the K-State offensive session.

Klein's teammates nicknamed him "The Honeybadger" but he certainly sounded more sweet than vicious this morning.

"I couldn't have predicted this season and I won't try to predict anything that might happen in the future," Klein said. "It would be an exercise in futility. But I'm just very fortunate to have been able to contribute and help K-State be successful."

Bowling and beef

Part of the AT&T Cotton Bowl experience every year for the players are trips to the Main Event entertainment center and the Lawry's Beef Bowl.

Arkansas tight end Chris Gragg said the Main Event party has been the highlight of his trip so far. He said the Arkansas trainers dominated in bowling, but he's not sure if teammate Greg Childs should be allowed to drive the Go-Karts again.

"He's not one of the best drivers, I would say," Gragg said with a grin.

Arkansas' turn at the Beef Bowl was Monday night. The chance to have all-you-can-eat prime rib might be a little too tempting for some players.

"I know our head strength and conditioning coach, Coach (Jason) Veltkamp, he's going to be watching those linemen to make sure they're not too heavy for practice tomorrow," Gragg said.

AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic players and coaches participate in daily media sessions during the week at the bowl's media headquarters, the Omni Mandalay Hotel in Las Colinas.

Monday morning's first session was the Kansas State defense, with select players and coordinator Chris Cosh. After lunch, it was the Arkansas offense's turn with coordinator Paul Petrino and players.

On Tuesday, it will be the Kansas State offense and the Arkansas defense, and then Wednesday the two head coaches will have a final media session together at the Omni Mandalay.

Cowboys Stadium-sized welcome kicks off AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic Week

If the rest of AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic Week is anything like the start, we're in for huge week.

The Arkansas and Kansas State teams were welcomed on Saturday night at Cowboys Stadium with a giant dinner buffet in one of end zone plazas. Artist Dan Dunn provided entertainment while the teams dined, whipping out huge portraits of the mascots of both teams and a single portrait representing Friday's on-field clash.

The Kilgore Rangerettes served as escorts and the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders were on hand to pose for pictures with the Super Bowl and Cotton Bowl trophies.

After a few welcoming comments from AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic chairman Tommy Bain, the teams headed to the 50 yard line to watch highlight films of their seasons on the colossal Cowboys Stadium video screen. It was a big way to kick off a big week for both teams.

THE MODERATOR: We're now joined by Coach Miles and players. Coach, we'd like to let you make an opening comment.
COACH MILES: First of all, I want you to know we truly respect those Texas A&M Aggies. They're a great team.
We knew we were going to have to play well when we lined up against them. We understand the tremendous support and loyal following that they have. We're honored to compete against them today.
Our football team is a very close-knit group of men.
They have all the characteristics of a very, very capable team.
In fact, somebody steps up to make a play when it's needed. It can be offense, defense or special teams.
I think tonight was just really a number of great performances to cap a year that they achieved greatly. A team that's beat /TEP the teams they've beaten and played as well as they have, this was a fitting game.
I have to thank the Cotton Bowl Committee and certainly the opportunity to play in such an historic game.
This game is made more important to us by the luncheon we had where to pick the great players and the great teams and the great circumstance of a Cotton Bowl. We're very honored to play in it. I think it became more important to us even after that luncheon.
I don't think there's any question that this will eventually be a BCS Bowl game. It has all the makings and all the strength and environment that you need.
But I'm really proud of our players. Our players are quality men. I got to tell you something. I love going to work with them. What we do as coaches, we ask them to do hard things. It's not easy. It's get up early, it's work late, it's study, it's pound the weights. You're sore. Just came off a game. Tough. It's time to do what we do. We prepare.
It's a rugged, ambitious culture.
So as a coach you get to the back end of a season, you've seen what they've accomplished, you're very much in their debt. I surely enjoyed this year. It's been a lot of fun. And these men have been just a joy to be around.

THE MODERATOR: Questions.
Q. Les, A&M has been a team that has defended the run well. How were you able to have so much success against them?
COACH MILES: I think our offensive line came to play. I think we got good runningbacks. I think our fullbacks are coming to life. I think our two-back was very good. I think our offensive line really said this is a challenge they wanted. I think they played to that challenge.
Q. Coach Miles and Jordan, this is a sign of your growing maturity after falling behind early, throwing an interception, you didn't seem to let that bother you at all.
Coach Sherman said even though they had you guys in numerous third-and-long situations, the one person they could not account for defensively was Jordan making plays with his feet, keeping plays alive. Coach Miles, talk to the growing maturity of Jordan. Jordan, talk to your feeling of bei. COACH MILES: Well, I'll jump in there quickly. What happens is it takes time. This position is a tough position.
It's cadenced, it's change of cadence. It's stem, motion, and the play, and then the check. It takes some time. And through a season, he's continued to get better. He applies his trade.
He works hard at it.
I think it's safe to say the back end of the season he's better than he was at the beginning. He pulled some key balls down and picked up first downs with his feet and kept drives alive that allowed us to score.
I think his play tonight is one of the reasons why we win.
JORDAN JEFFERSON: Well, the play that I threw the pick on, they was in the two-tail coverage. ^ Rubin ran right past the quarterback. I didn't think the safety was there fast enough to make a play on it. After my play-action, I thought I would be able to get the ball over the corner, the safety wouldn't make the play. The ball fell kind of low on me.
I really couldn't let that turnover really define us as a team. That turnover would mess up everything for us. I had to overlook that, come out the next drive, make sure we put points on the board. That's what I did throughout the continuation of the game.
Q. Les, you talked all week about the SEC, the strength of it. How much of that do you think plays into the fact that y'all were able to run the ball so well?
COACH MILES: I think our league is a league where you have to run the football to keep defenses at bay. I think more than maybe the point that you're making is, is that we play in environments similar to this. We play at Florida, at Alabama, on the road at any number of places where we're used to playing in big games.
I think when you get to the Bowl season, that's an advantage for our conference. I think our guys, we're used to seeing quality teams. They get a lead on us, we understand how to play in tight quarters. It's just a matter of time.
Q. Coach Miles and Tyrann, the opening drive he has the saving kick. Kind of hunts him down. Did you realize that speed he had? After a win like today, when you go on that recruiting trail, what will you tell the kids to go to LSU next season?
COACH MILES: Well, Tyrann Mathieu is a special athlete. He's learning how to make those plays in the confines of a defense. But he always made those plays. I promise you, we did know that he was that capable.
I can tell you that the experience that our guys are having at this school, they're getting their degree, it's supported very fully, they're getting an opportunity for a great education and, therefore, a great opportunity at a future job, and they play for championships.
I think the recruiting trail, a win in a quality Bowl game like the Cotton Bowl, just tells you that the program's in great shape, and that next year there's some special opportunities, as well.
Q. Coach and Terrence, a rush, first offense, pass when you need to, talk about the receivers being patient, especially Terrence a senior in his final game, answering the call when given the challenge tonight.
COACH MILES: Well, Terrence Toliver has always been a great receiver. He's always a team man. He does what we ask him to do.
In the Florida game, he won the game. In this game, when we needed him to make plays, he made plays. He'll go on and play at another level and do the same things there.
But it's a team sport. It has not to do with all about 'my', it's really all about the team.
The opportunity for a quarterback to go back in the pocket with a dual threat of the fact that it could be a run or a pass allows him to throw the football better, allows him to get out and scramble, allows us to be a better offense.
Terrence Toliver understands that.
TERRENCE TOLIVER: Like coach said, I'm not a selfish player. My senior year, I didn't have as many catches as I had last year. I learned how to just adjust, be a team player, and in the run game, just block.
We had a thousand-yard rusher this year. Our receiver group was a big part of that. But when we step in big games, coach always say, Just make a play.
Our offense, passing game, kind of struggled this year. In big games we always step it up: Alabama, Florida, in this game, too. So coach said that we gonna throw the ball around the field and just make plays, just execute the game plan. I think we did that tonight.
Q. Terrence, your last game, college football, three touchdowns, talk about how special it is for you, what this night means to you?
TERRENCE TOLIVER: It's real special. Since I've been to LSU, I took visits to A&M. I chose to go a different way. Since I've been at LSU, I always wanted to play a Texas school, whether it was Texas A&M, Texas. Just play a good game, have a game of my life in my own home state. It was great for me. My family game, support.
Like I say, I just have a lot of support on this team with the coaches. They put together a great game plan. We executed to the fullest. I'm very excited about the win that we had.
Q. Jordan, describe your emotions playing on this stage, Cowboy Stadium, home of this year's Super Bowl, 83,000 fans in the seat. Talk about being on this big of a stage. Secondly, the performance that you did, not only with your legs but your arm. Do you feel you've silenced some of your critics, shown them you're more of a complete quarterback than the naysayers would have given you credit for before this game?
JORDAN JEFFERSON: I was very excited playing in this stadium. We were at the breaking point of the 75th Cotton Bowl, I was excited for that. I knew Texas A&M was going to have a lot of fans in the stadium. I knew LSU was going to show a lot of support for us as well.
It's just a nice facility. You got the big screen, is probably a distraction for everybody in the stands. But, I mean, it's a loud facility, nice facility, real clean. In the Dallas area, it's very clean as well.
I just came into this game with the mindset, like what you said, showing the critics that I can do, you know, what I need to do on the field to be noticed as a good quarterback. I really feel that, you know, I did that tonight.
But I couldn't do it without Terrence. I couldn't do it without the O-line protecting for me and making sure that they blocked the Butkus Award winner. I couldn't do it without the running game doing as well as they did it, without the coaches getting us prepared for this game.
They did a great job throughout the game calling the plays, attacking Texas A&M's defense. They just kept us well-prepared throughout the preparation of this Bowl game.
Q. Coach Miles, you talked about Terrence and the season he's had. I know he hasn't put up the numbers he wanted to.
How has he handled that? What growth have you seen from him, not only as a player inside the lines, but outside the lines, too?
COACH MILES: He's always been a leader. He came in and played as a true freshman. When you come in as a freshman, there's many times the room tries to put you in a position where you're only going to do these things. He just really stepped through some boundaries there. He's really always been that guy.
He was a leader on this team at a time when he was not necessarily getting the credit that he would have deserved.
He certainly is a go-to guy really for any team in this country. Frankly, we struggled at times getting him the ball while we ran the football effectively, while we did other things. Didn't seem to bother him. He worked hard at it.
I want you to know something. He doesn't miss practice. He's just what you need. He's a great player that, again, puts team first.

THE MODERATOR: Coach, your comments about this evening's game, please.
COACH SHERMAN: Well, I thought we prepared extremely well for the football game, but obviously today, without question, LSU was the better team. I take my hat off to them.
They really played well and gave us all we could handle.
There came a point there that it was close. We were able to jump out early, but weren't able to hold onto it. They run the ball pretty effectively for us. Our gap fits in the run game weren't what they needed to be.
Turned the ball over three times which doesn't help against a team like that. But, again, they were definitely the better team. Take my hat off to Les Miles and his staff. They did a great job.
THE MODERATOR: Thank you. First question.

Q. Ryan, the interception at the end of the second half, talk us through what happened on that play? What can you build from the end of this season and this game going into next year?
RYAN TANNEHILL: At the end of the half, went to my first read on the right side, got jammed up pretty bad. Came across to my second read. The guy just made a great play and undercut the throw.
Going into next year, it's tough to think about that right now. We just came off a tough loss. This team put a lot into it. I put a lot into this game. To not go out there and perform the way I'm capable of, we're capable of, it hurts.
I feel bad for my teammates, you know. Kind of dropped the ball. It's a tough feeling. You never want to do that to the guys you love and the guys you work so hard with.
So it's definitely tough.
Q. Mike and Lucas, the way you guys defended the run so well the last six games of the season, what went wrong that let LSU run the ball the way they did?
LUCAS PATTERSON: I think, you know, most of it, like coach said, was gap fits. You know, they prepared really well.
They come out real physical in the first half. I think a lot of it was on third down and long and we let the quarterback get out of contain, and he scrambled for the first down a lot of times.
Little mistakes on our part that turned into big plays for them.
COACH SHERMAN: I think they were 9-16 on third down.
I thought we had them in some situations. But the quarterback was able to escape and make successful big plays with his feet.
I don't know how much yardage he had, but he was very instrumental in their rushing yardage. Sometimes in pass coverage, rushing the quarterback, it's always hard to account for someone, particularly an athlete like Jefferson.
Q. Coach, you talk about keeping an even-keel, not getting too high when you win, too low when you lose. How do you keep your team even-keeled after a loss like that?
COACH SHERMAN: Well, as I told them after the game -- I told them before the game I was proud of them as a football team, and that doesn't change because we lost a football game. I hope my wife still loves me because we lost a football game. I hope it's not based on that. I still love couldn't take the final step. Like I said before the game, consequences of winning is great expectations which there were for our fans in this ballgame, which it should have been.
which there was with LSU. There's great rewards. But when you don't finish it off like we didn't finish it off, there's great disappointment.

At the same time I think when you look at the body of work that the guys put in this year collectively, the stretch run that they had, I think we'll be able to bounce back from this. We lost to a very good football team today.
Q. Coach, could you expand, it seemed like the defense would get into situations where you were ideal with down and distance on third down, but expand on the inability to get off the field, to make that play that would give your offense another opportunity to come back on the field?
COACH SHERMAN: I would agree with that. I thought early, to be honest with you, in the first half, the first quarter, when they started to run the ball pretty effectively, we weren't getting them in enough third downs. But then we did end up putting them in about 16 situations. The quarterback would drop back and would rush the quarterback and lose contain or we'd get washed out our rush lane and he would take off running when guys were back into coverage.
I don't think we had as great a pass-rush as we've had in the past for whatever reason. You got to give their offensive line credit. Coming into the game, I got a lot of respect for their left tackle. I thought he played very well in this ballgame /KWH I watched him. I thought their offensive line as a group did a good job.
You have to give credit to a good athlete, the quarterback, he made a lot of good plays for them. I thought he was the difference in the game.
Q. Can you tell us what happened to Hodges, how you think that affected your defense?
COACH SHERMAN: Well, I would hate to put it on that because injury is part of the game. We have to be able to adjust with the loss of a player like Mike.
He is the heart and soul of our defense in many ways.
At the same time you can't use that as a reason why we didn't perform the way we should have been capable of performing.
But Mike I believe had an ACL sprain, was not able to reenter the game. But I still expect I think in football, you know, one guy gets hurt, another guy has to step in and make the play. That goes for LSU, goes for us, goes for everybody.
Q. Coach, you talked about Jordan Jefferson, him making plays with his legs.
COACH SHERMAN: He also made some plays with his arm, too.
Q. Can you talk a little bit more in detail about not only what he did with his legs, but what he did with his arms.
COACH SHERMAN: It was on first and second down he was throwing the ball with the play-action, faking one way, coming back. We call it a play pass. He was able to beat our coverage and the receiver made a nice play. Beat us twice on plays like that off of a play fake.
I thought he was a complete quarterback. I was no way indicating he was just a run-around athlete. I thought he threw the ball about as good as I've seen him throw on tape. I thought he was decisive, aggressive and accurate. He snuck a couple in there that I didn't think he was going to get in.
Q. One player who did have a good game tonight was Jeff Fuller. Talk about his performance tonight, if that was part of the game plan to get him more involved.
COACH SHERMAN: No, we don't necessarily say we're going to feed the ball to any one particular player. We kind of go through our progression based on what's called. I thought Jeff just played a good game against a very good player. I thought Cyrus Gray had a very good game as well.
Matt Allen had a very good game, our center.
So it was more than just Jeff, though I thought Jeff had one of his better games. I thought he made some nice catches, ran some good routes. When we threw the ball to him, most of the time he made a play with his hands.
Q. Lucas, you mentioned the Hodges' injury earlier, but what was the biggest thing you felt was missing after Mike went out?
LUCAS PATTERSON: Mike is a great player. He's the leader of this defense. But just like coach said, injuries happen in football. I think Kyle put in the situation he was in, he played well.
But, I mean, you can't replace a player like Hodges.
He's one of my good friends. It's a terrible situation for him to be in, but, like coach said, there's no excuses, injuries happen.

Texas A&M has reclaimed the lead in what's been a back-and-forth affair filled with big plays.

This time it was Texas A&M running back Cyrus Gray who rolled to his right, then pulled up and tossed a pass 14 yards to Uzoma Nwatchukwu, who was wide open in the end zone.

The Aggies drove 78 yards in seven plays that time to claim a 17-14 lead with 7:44 left in the half. You get the feeling there are plenty more big plays ahead.

Jefferson's TD run makes it moot, gives LSU lead

Dicky Maegle in the house

Former Rice great Dicky Maegle was just interviewed on the sideline by Fox television. Maegle is part of one of the most famous plays in college football history and it happened in the 1954 Cotton Bowl.

Maegle had broken a run down the right sideline and was sure to score when Alabama's Tommy Lewis jumped off the benched and tackled him. The old footage of the famed "bench tackle" still gets a chuckle when it's shown at Cotton Bowl functions.

AT&T Cotton Bowl telecast will look a lot like Super Bowl XLV

The AT&T Cotton Bowl's primetime telecast on FOX tonight will have Super Bowl-like production values. That's because FOX is also broadcasting Super Bowl XLV in a month from the same site, Cowboys Stadium.

The AT&T Cotton Bowl broadcast will have a lot of the same technological bells and whistles as the Super Bowl telecast. Even the pregame show will be hosted on the same sideline set as the Super Bowl.

Kenny Albert and Daryl "Moose" Johnston will handle the play-by-play and color, respectively, with sideline reports from Charles Davis and John Lynch. Chris Rose will host the pregame show, starting at 7 p.m. Central, and broadcasting legend Pat Summerall will contribute his insights.

The telecast will have such a Super Bowl feel, viewers at home might want to do their own dress rehearsal and host a Super Bowl-like viewing party. It's never to early to try out that new guacamole dip recipe.

Tip: Check the traffic reports before heading to the game

North Texas' infamous traffic snarls caused LSU coach Les Miles to be late to his Wednesday press conference, and they might cause a delay for some fans heading to tonight's game.

A fuel tanker overturned on I-30, the main artery to Arlington, at 1:30 a.m. Friday, causing traffic to be closed in both directions just west of downtown Dallas.

The highway's westbound lanes, heading towards Arlington, were open and clear by mid-morning, but eastbound traffic was still gridlocked. Authorities are hoping to open the eastbound lanes by this afternoon.

Still, it's always a good idea to make a quick check of the traffic reports before getting in the car for tonight's AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic. Although we have our share of traffic jams in North Texas, we also have lots of highways that can be used as alternate routes.

Big fun at the AT&T Big Play Luncheon

The AT&T Big Play Luncheon was once again a festive gathering on the eve of the AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic.

Celebrities, football fans and the entire squads of both teams attended the luncheon at the Hilton Anatole Hotel on Thursday. Special guests this year were about 20 members of the AT&T Cotton Bowl Hall of Fame, including Jim Brown who played in the 1957 Classic. Brown, one of the greatest players in football history, will participate in the coin toss before Fridays' 75th Classic.

With Brad Sham emceeing, luncheon-goers were entertained with speeches by both coaches, including LSU's Les Miles who grew up near Cleveland and idolized Brown. Daryl "Moose" Johnston, who will be the color analyst on the FOX broadcast of the game, was also one of the featured speakers.

Winners of the Cotton Bowl's student art contest were honored, as well as scholar-athlete award winners from both teams: Texas A&M's Michael Hodges and LSU's Richard Dugas.

The luncheon's famed door prizes come with a catch - literally. Texas A&M quarterback Ryan Tannehill and LSU quarterback Jordan Jefferson threw autographed footballs to the lucky winners of the drawing. If they didn't catch the pass, well, good thing there's no replay review!

Dallas Cowboys VIPs stop by LSU's final practice

The LSU Tigers had some special visitors in their final walk-through practice Thursday at Cowboys Stadium.

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and head coach Jason Garrett came by the Tigers' practice. With them were Cowboys Executive VPs Stephen Jones, a Cotton Bowl board member, and Jerry Jones, Jr.

The group was at the stadium earlier for the press conference to announce Garrett, formerly the interim coach, would have the job on a permanent basis.Part of the reason for the visit was to see LSU coach Les Miles, a former Cowboys assistant coach.

Jerry Jones, a former player at fellow SEC school Arkansas, took time to address the team.

"His message was a very strong one," Miles said. "It was a great moment. Our team lit up to it."

Former A&M great Ty Warren, now with the New England Patriots, stopped by Cowboys Stadium for the Aggies' final walk-through practice for Friday's AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic.

Warren has spent the season on injured reserve after suffering a hip injury during training camp. Earlier this week, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Stephen McGee, another former A&M standout, stopped by practice.

Hospital visits hit home for LSU and Texas A&M players

Texas A&M's Sherman calls AT&T Cotton Bowl a "Super Bowl environment"

Cowboys Stadium, site of the AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic, will also host Super Bowl XLV next month. Texas A&M head coach Mike Sherman said playing in the 2011 Cotton Bowl will be the next best thing to the Super Bowl.

"This is really a Super Bowl environment," Sherman said Wednesday. "Having had a chance to coach in one at one time, it's very similar. The celebrity status that our players feel, the activities they attend, it's almost akin to a Super Bowl week. This is our Super Bowl."

Miles' late arrival leads to Sherman one-liner

LSU head coach Les Miles was nearly 45 minutes late to the head coaches' press conference because of he got caught up in a traffic jam.

Traditionally, the two head coaches sit on the dais with the AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic trophy between them. At the end of the press conference, they pose for photographs together with the trophy.

Texas A&M head coach Mike Sherman had to leave for practice before Miles arrived, so he posed with the trophy alone.

"Since Les isn't here," Sherman quipped, "can I take it with me?"

LSU's Miles answers Michigan questions

LSU coach Les Miles could not avoid questions about the job opening at Michigan at the AT&T Cotton Bowl's head coaches press conference Wednesday.

"I have received no contact from Michigan," Miles said. "Michigan will be fine. There will always be a Michigan. Speculation is not factual. My focus is complete. We're preparing to play a great A&M team and that's my want and desire."

Miles has strong ties to Michigan as a former player and assistant coach for the Wolverines. His name has come up in the past when the Michigan position was open.

Press conference moderator Peter Irwin tried to discourage questions about Michigan, but they were unavoidable since Miles will likely be unavailable to the media until after Friday's Cotton Bowl game.

"I have no real view of anything but what I'm doing right here," Miles said. "I don't think anybody has any reason to be concerned in any way. Let's just go to practice and enjoy this week and go on."

Bowling, beef and basketball keeping the AT&T Cotton Bowl teams entertained

   Tuesday night, players from both LSU and Texas A&M were treated to a Dallas Mavericks game at the American Airlines Center.
   Before the game, Texas A&M took its turn in the Beef Bowl, the longstanding Cotton Bowl dining tradition at Lawry's The Prime Rib.
   The consensus favorite among the Aggies to eat the most prime rib was offensive lineman Rhontae Scales, who is listed at a svelte 6-6, 317 pounds.
   "I'd have to say Rhontae Scales," said center Matt Allen. "He can eat. That's a big boy. [When he comes over] lock the fridge and the pantry."
   On Sunday night, the teams were given full-run of Mane Event, an entertainment and arcade complex. Bowling was the game of choice during Texas A&M's visit with kicker Ross Gilliam and quarterbacks Jerrod Johnson and Ryan Tannehill among the top keglers.
   "Tannehill can pretty much do anything," said cornerback Terrence Frederick, who himself bowled a personal best of 193. "Golf, ski. He's pretty good at anything."
   Reports from the event, however, said Gilliam took top honors on the lanes with a 207.

LSU's Miles may get Michigan questions at Wednesday press conference

   LSU coach Les Miles may have to field questions about something other than Friday's AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic when he and Texas A&M coach Mike Sherman participate in a final pre-game press conference Wednesday.
   Detroit news outlets are reporting that Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez has been fired, although the school says no decision has been made.
   Miles is a former Michigan assistant coach and player. His strong Michigan ties have caused his name to come up in the past when the Wolverines' job was available. However, Miles reportedly would have to play a $1.25 million buyout to LSU if he were to leave for Ann Arbor.
   All in all, it could make for an interesting press conference Wednesday morning.

LSU players down 415 pounds of prime rib at the Beef Bowl

Monday night was LSU’s turn to participate in the Beef Bowl, the annual chowfest hosted by area restaurant Lawry’s The Prime Rib.

LSU players reportedlay are 415 pounds of beef, but could have done more damage. Texas A&M will see how much prime rib it can consume Tuesday during its turn in the Beef Bowl, but in recent years the competitive aspect has been toned down.

"I guess they figured it was too close to the game to try to have everybody try to out-eat each other," LSU offensive lineman Joseph Barksdale said. "We had just gotten out of practice. After I ate my first plate, I actually almost fell asleep. I was tired, man."

Barksdale had been tabbed as one of the top eaters on the LSU team, but most of the money would have been on defensive tackle Drake Nevis.

"Man, that guy can eat," fellow defensive tackle Lazarius Levingston said. "He’s a greedy young man.

"I’ve seen Drake eat a whole box of pizza, then one hour later want to go get him a one-pound hamburger."

And in case any LSU players did overindulge?

"We'll get it off of them [in practice]," defensive coordinator John Chavis said.

LSU defensive coordinator flattered by Texas mentions, but staying put

LSU defensive coordinator John Chavis' name has been mentioned in regards to the University of Texas' search to fill the same position. Being in Texas this week, it's been a constant topic for Chavis.

"I’m flattered if I am mentioned at a program like Texas," Chavis said. "Texas is a great program. Mack Brown is a great man. I consider Mack a friend. I’m flattered if I am mentioned there, I’m not saying that I have or will be. But I’m happy and I expect to be back at LSU next year."

Texas is looking to replace Will Muschamp, who left to become the head coach at Florida.

LSU offensive tackle Joseph Barksdale will have the pleasure of trying to block Texas A&M outside linebacker Von Miller, the Butkus Award winner.

Barksdale was asked what makes Miller a special player.

"His mix of finesse and violence," Barksdale said. "Most of the time you find one or the other. When you can use both, that's when you're really effective."

Barksdale has spent time studying Miller's mixed bag of moves to get to the passer.

"He's definitely someone you have to get ready for," Barksdale said. "He has a lot of moves. Any time you're a talented player, you've got more than just a rip or a spin move."

LSU Tigers rooting for Auburn in national championship game

No matter what happens in Monday's BCS National Championship Game, the LSU Tigers will face the defending national champions during the 2011 season.

LSU opens the season against Oregon in a return trip to Cowboys Stadium. The Tigers will also play Auburn as part of their SEC schedule.

Although it would be nice to open the season against the national champions, LSU players were backing their fellow SEC team in Monday's game.

"You always have to stick with the SEC," LSU quarterback Jordan Jefferson said. "Auburn's a great team. They have a great style of play. You just have to go for the SEC team. That's basically family."

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Stephen McGee attended his alma mater's practice Tuesday at Cowboys Stadium.

The former Texas A&M standout had said last week, prior to his first NFL start against the Philadelphia Eagles, that he wanted to attend a practice. McGee said he wanted to Texas A&M coach Mike Sherman, who coached him his senior year in College Station.

LSU’S RIDLEY RULED ELIGIBLE FOR BOWL GAME
BATON ROUGE – The NCAA has determined that Stevan Ridley did not violate its bylaws and he is eligible to play in the Tigers’ Cotton Bowl appearance on Friday.
"This is great news. We put our faith in the system and the NCAA made the right decision,” said LSU coach Les Miles. “We appreciate the efforts put forth by the NCAA and the LSU administration. We
are grateful that the NCAA made this a priority at this time of year. If you believe in the mission of the NCAA, this decision is good for college athletics. I told the team about the news at the end of practice and they’re a happy group.”
Ridley was initially declared ineligible, however, after additional information was provided to the NCAA, it was determined no violation of NCAA rules occurred in this instance.
“We thank the NCAA for looking at this case over the holidays and for resolving this issue on such short notice,” said Joe Alleva, LSU Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics. “This ruling is in the best interests of the student-athlete and that’s what the NCAA is all about.”
Ridley played in all 12 games during LSU’s 2010 regular season and leads the team in rushing with 1,042 yards on 225 carries while rushing for 14 touchdowns, averaging 86.8 yards per game. He is ranked fourth in the Southeastern Conference in rushing yards per game.

Hospital visits highlight week of activity

The AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic is more than just a football game, it's an event that touches all parts of the North Texas community.

As part of that spirit, the players of both LSU and Texas A&M will get an opportunity to reach out to some very special people on Tuesday.

In the morning, LSU players will visit Scottish Rite Hospital. That afternoon, Texas A&M players will visit Children's Medical Center.

The hospital visits are an annual tradition with the AT&T Cotton Bowl. If they are anything like years' past, the players will get as much out of the visits as the young patients who look up to them.

LSU coach Les Miles is no stranger to Texas, having coached at Oklahoma State prior to taking over the Tigers' program. But he's also familiar with the Dallas area as a former tight ends coach of the Dallas Cowboys.

"I enjoy coming back to Dallas because I was very fortunate to be a part of the Dallas Cowboys organization for three years," Miles said during Sunday's AT&T Cotton Bowl Media Day press conference.

Miles coached in Dallas from 1998-2000, the first two seasons under Chan Gailey and the third under Dave Campo.

Practices under way for AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic

Both Texas A&M and LSU will practice in the comfortable confines of Cowboys Stadium this week as they prepare for Friday's kickoff.

Texas A&M's practices are open to the media for the first 15 minutes. LSU's practices are completely closed to the media. Both teams will make coaches and players available for interviews after practice, in addition to their daily press conferences at the AT&T Cotton Bowl media headquarters.

Ole Miss and Oklahoma State found an advantage in practicing at Cowboys Stadium in the days leading up to the game: By kickoff, the "awe factor" of the Cowboys' giant video screen has worn off.

Texas A&M has a slight advantage in that area because the Aggies have played a game in Cowboys Stadium each of the last two seasons. However, the Aggies lost both times to Arkansas.

"Hopefully we're going to break that losing streak we've got here," Texas A&M linebacker Michael Hodges said. "Hopefully they're a little more star-struck than we are and it [the video boards] will be a little bit of a distraction for them."

Texas A&M players reported to their team headquarters at the Gaylord Texan resort in Grapevine via their personal vehicles.

Cotton Bowl teams get first-class welcome

Traditionally, New Year's Day is the culmination of a week of celebrations for the AT&T Cotton Bowl. This year, Jan. 1 was the day the parties got started with the Cowboys Stadium Welcome.

Both the LSU and Texas A&M teams were welcomed to town with food and fun in the East Plaza of Cowboys Stadium. While the teams ate fajitas, artist Dan Dunn and Paintjam painted Cotton Bowl-related portraits at rapid speed on huge, spinning canvases.

Then came brief welcome speeches from Classic chairman Tommy Bain and Dallas Cowboys Executive VP Stephen Jones. The Cowboys were the host for the party, which was held in the East End Zone Plaza overlooking the stadium.

After dinner, the group moved to the 50 yard line to watch videos of the teams on the stadium's 60-yard long, 72-foot tall video screen.

A group of Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders stood by the Cotton Bowl and Lombardi Trophies, while a squadron of Kilgore Rangerettes ushered the crowd into and around the building.

"We did our thing last year at Shreveport [Independence Bowl], but this is outstanding," Texas A&M linebacker Michael Hodges said. "Everything's been so plush and first-class so far."

The Aggies reported for the game week between noon and 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Gaylord Texan resort.

"Everything's been so great, and we haven't even been here 24 hours yet," Hodges said. "Our facility over there [at the Gaylord Texan], you can't even describe it. It's unbelievable."
